To celebrate Afiya Pain and Spine Institute's first anniversary, we designed a commemorative pin and a heartfelt thank-you letter for its patients. The pin featured Afiya's “Tree of Life” design, while the accompanying double-sided card carried a message of hope, reinforcing the institute's mission with the slogan:

"Where pain once was, a new hope now lives."

The pins and letters were gifted to patients as a token of appreciation for entrusting Afiya with their health and recovery journey. According to Afiya's staff, the designs were well received, and patients deeply appreciated the gesture.

To mark the occasion, Afiya also commissioned a special work of art, unveiled at its Toronto clinic. Created by Toronto-based artist Oldboy, the piece—"Darkness Before the Dawn"—symbolizes resilience, healing, and the transformative power of hope.

“DARKNESS BEFORE THE DAWN,” 2024
ACRYLIC, CHIYOGAMI PAPER, SILVER FOIL, & Mixed Media on Canvas
48” x  36” (121.92cm x 91.44cm)

“Darkness Before The Dawn” is a piece crafted by local Toronto artist and designer Oldboy. Commissioned by Afiya, this vivid work resonates with a profound message of optimism and resilience amid life’s adversity.

The artwork unfolds through the use of Japanese chiyogami paper, original poster art, silver foil, and acrylic paint, converging into a blend of visual storytelling. Drawing inspiration from the Japanese Sogara Yuzen tradition of patterned paper-making and screen printing, the collage seamlessly blends nature’s essence with the raw energy of street and poster art, all while embracing a contemporary, glitchy aesthetic.

At its heart, “Darkness Before The Dawn” symbolizes the unwavering courage of Afiya clinic’s patients, a beacon of light amidst darkness. Through layers of texture and a vibrant gloss varnish, the artwork pulses with vitality and movement, igniting the space with its powerful hues and raw emotion. It is a testament to the clinic’s commitment — to guide individuals from moments of doubt and uncertainty towards a renewed sense of purpose, meaning, and hope. In times of pain, life may take on a dark presence, bringing about the feeling of dread and hopelessness. Yet in such periods of need, we find solace through courage, the compassion of community, and the support of our loved ones. Just as darkness precedes the dawn, the enduring spirit of hope always brings the promise of awakening light.
